Donate Life Awareness Month

by Peter Rooney

2020 was a year like no other. The Covid-19 pandemic upended our world. Many things were cancelled—including the 2020 Transplant Games of America, which were set to take place last July.

Fast-forward to 2021. As we’ve witnessed in countless areas of our lives, while the pandemic wreaked havoc, it also spurred silver linings: broad adoption of new technologies. New approaches to fighting deadly diseases. The rise of and new trust in telemedicine. Flexible work and remote learning. And new ways to deliver rich experiences to wide audiences.

This year, I’m happy to report that the Transplant Games of America are back—bigger and better than ever, because more people from all over the country will be able to be there virtually, participating from their own homes and hometowns, elevating the reach and impact of this extraordinary event 30 years in the making.

For the past three decades, the Transplant Games of America has brought together thousands of transplant recipients, living donors, donor families, individuals on the waiting list, caregivers, transplant professionals, supporters and spectators for the world’s largest celebration of life. We will do that again this year, in person, in New Jersey, albeit on a smaller scale: Though no live audience will be in attendance, we will still hold and air our signature events such as the Opening Ceremony, the Living Donor Celebration and the Donor Tribute from the Meadowlands, and we expect a record number of participants joining in remotely.

So I invite you to come be a part of the reformatted 2020 Transplant Games of America this July, in which we will “Honor the Journey…Coast to Coast.” The combination of live and virtual participation will provide us with a unique opportunity to reinforce our mission of highlighting the critical need for organ and tissue donation. Silver lining, indeed.
